The Washington Commanders like rookie seventh-round pick Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt so much that they're reportedly willing to move on from starting running back Brian Robinson Jr. before the season. NFL teams have until next week to trim their rosters from 90 to 53 players.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Sunday that the Commanders were shopping Robinson ahead of his fourth NFL season. Robinson is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has appeared in 41 games with 37 starts for the Commanders. He was expected to be Washington's starting back in 2025, with Austin Ekeler handling third down and pass-catching duties. However, the emergence of Croskey-Merritt and Washington's confidence in Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. has the Commanders considering moving on from Robinson.

If Washington does move on from Robinson, we've identified five teams who could have interest.

Dallas Cowboys

Would the Commanders trade Robinson to the Cowboys? Of course. You didn't see GM Adam Peters hesitate in trading wide receiver Jahan Dotson to Philadelphia. This is different. Robinson can play. Veteran Javonte Williams is the leader in the clubhouse for Dallas. The Cowboys also signed another veteran, Miles Sanders. Those two will compete for carries this season. Robinson is better than both. Rookie Jaydon Blue is the key. The Cowboys love him. A rookie fifth-round pick, Blue has missed both preseason games due to injury, but should be fine for Week 1. If Dallas traded for Robinson, it would likely move on from one of the veterans, likely Sanders.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers don't necessarily need Robinson because they Christian McCaffrey. But it's fair to ask if McCaffrey is slowing down. At 29, McCaffrey missed most of last season due to injury. He's back now, which is great for San Francisco. However, most of the depth behind McCaffrey is battling some type of injury. Projected top backup, Isaac Guerendo, is dealing with a shoulder injury. Guerendo has exciting potential, but has dealt with numerous injuries since entering the league last year. Rookie fifth-round pick Jordan James is out for a few weeks, but should be back for Week 1. By trading for Robinson, head coach Kyle Shanahan would ensure that the 49ers have a starting-caliber back ready to go if McCaffrey would miss any time.

Houston Texans

The Texans could begin the season without starter Joe Mixon. However, they did sign veteran Nick Chubb. Chubb has missed a total of 24 games combined the past two years after recovering from a serious knee injury. While he looked good in Houston's last preseason game, would the Texans want to go into the season with Mixon and Chubb and Dameon Pierce and rookie Woody Marks behind them? Marks has also had an impressive training camp and preseason. Chubb's preseason performance makes Houston look like less of an option.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns used second and fourth-round picks on running backs Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson in April's NFL draft. Judkins has faced off-field issues, while Sampson has had an impressive summer. Jerome Ford is the projected starter. Overall, the Browns lack offensive playmakers. Robinson could push for an immediate starting role in Cleveland. Judkins was recently cleared in a domestic case, but could still face punishment from the NFL. If and when he plays, he looks like a long-term future RB1. Robinson would give the Browns a temporary RB1 for the 2025 season.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans have two talented backs atop the depth chart: Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears. However, Spears recently suffered an ankle injury. Robinson is a different type of back than Pollard and Spears. Robinson brings more of a power running style to Tennessee. Tennessee has No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward at quarterback and an improved offensive line. The Titans should do everything in their power to surround Ward with more talent, including adding to the running game. Robinson and Pollard would likely share the majority of Tennessee's running back carries, with Spears mixed in. Something else of note: Longtime former Washington RB coach Randy Jordan is in his second season as the Titans RB coach. Jordan coached Robinson for two seasons.
