Aaron Rodgers was 'a possibility' for Rams if Matthew Stafford left
The Los Angeles Rams were a lot closer to adding Aaron Rodgers than people realize.
While reports surfaced earlier this offseason that Rodgers was interested in joining the Rams if Matthew Stafford left, it was unclear how serious the connection was between the veteran quarterback and the team.
However, Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed in an interview with NFL Network's Kyle Brandt that, while keeping Stafford was their No. 1 priority, Rodgers was "a possibility" for the team in the event they couldn't re-sign Stafford.
“Our first priority, which was consistently communicated, was, ‘Hey, let’s work out something with Matthew,’ and we were very fortunate that it worked out that way,” McVay said. “If that wasn’t able to occur, then that [Rodgers] was definitely — conversations and a possibility for us.
I have a ton of respect for the body of work, and I’ve gotten to know Aaron and enjoy the conversations and just the approach — the way that he thinks about the game and in life. And so, that was a possibility. But our first priority was always to be able to get Matthew back and what I do feel really fortunate about is I think we’re closer than ever. I think sometimes when you’re able to have real conversations, I think you can appreciate the love that’s been built up but also the ability to be honest with one another. I’m really glad that worked out. I know there’s a lot of people in Pittsburgh that are really excited that’s come to fruition, and I’m a big fan of his.”
“That was a possibility.”

The funniest part of all this is that Rodgers said he would bring his receiver from the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets with him to L.A. if he joined the team, in Davante Adams ... who ended up signing with the Rams anyway. In another interesting twist, the Pittsburgh Steelers (who Rodgers just signed with) reportedly preferred a trade for Stafford over Rodgers.
In the end, the Rams avoided a potential media catastrophe with Rodgers by keeping Stafford. Now they have a consistent offense with one of the best quarterbacks in the league still under center.
