A.J. Brown feels 'sad' for Treylon Burks but is grateful for the trade to the Eagles

During the 2022 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans shockingly dealt top wide receiver A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles in return for the 18th and 101st overall picks. Contract negotiations between Brown and the Titans had stalled, forcing former general manager Jon Robinson into a tough decision. The franchise still hasn't recovered.

Since arriving in Philadelphia, Brown has recorded 261 receptions for 4,031 yards and 25 touchdowns while helping the team win a championship. Meanwhile, Burks has struggled to stay healthy due to multiple injuries, the latest being a fractured collarbone that landed him on injured reserve after going unclaimed on waivers.

On a recent interview with Pardon My Take, Brown reflected on the trade and the tough road Burks has traveled early in his NFL career.

“I’m grateful that happened,” Brown said. “I like to say that I outgrew that situation at Tennessee. I’m glad this happened, because I felt like I was meant to shine. We needed a big team with a big market and I think this is the right place and the best fit for me. I am a little sad for Treylon Burks. I wish he could get healthy, because he is a good kid and I talk to him numerous times. I’ve got his number. It sucks to see it go down like that.”

Burks has missed at least six games in each of his first three seasons, catching just one touchdown pass over that span. While Burks was a first-round talent coming out of Arkansas, the immense pressure of replacing Brown was too much to overcome.

Robinson, who has since been fired, has publicly acknowledged that he regrets trading Brown.

"Again, if I had one of those mulligans, I would probably do that one. In hindsight, if you had a do-over, I'd be an idiot to sit here and say, 'No, I'd do it again.' No, you'd do it different. But we made the decision that we made, and then the rest is what it is."

The regret extends beyond the trade itself, as Robinson’s entire 2022 draft class has proven underwhelming. Of the nine players selected, only Roger McCreary and Chigoziem Okonkwo remain on the Titans’ roster.
