Angel Gomes: ‘Playing for England remains a big goal for me’

Since arriving at Marseille on a free transfer from Lille this summer, Angel Gomes (25) has had to quickly adapt to a new system and status under Roberto De Zerbi. Yet beyond adapting to life at the Vélodrome, the former Manchester United prospect has said that he still has an ambition to return to the England setup. Speaking to Le Phocéen, Gomes was asked to choose between a personal accolade and international recognition — and his answer was immediate. “I’d rather be called up by England. I’m more collective than individual. Representing the Three Lions remains a big goal for me.”Having developed through United’s academy and represented England from U16 to U21 level, Gomes’ career had taken an unconventional route to earning his first four senior caps for the Three Lions under interim manager Lee Carsely last year. He is yet to feature under current boss Thomas Tuchel since his move to Marseille.GFFN | George Boxall
