Area track and field roundup for May 10: Ethan/Parkston dominates in Parker meet
May 10—PARKER, S.D. — It was the Ethan/Parkston High School track and field team's day on Saturday at the Parker Booster Club Invitational.
Ethan/Parkston ran away with both the boys and girls team titles, winning by at least 75 points on both leaderboards. The boys (182) finished 79 points better than second-place Viborg-Hurley (103) with Parker (93), Freeman (85) and Garretson (79) rounding out the top five. The girls (190) finished 75 points ahead of Chester (115) with Parker (81), Freeman (80) and Viborg-Hurley (61) following.
Ethan/Parkston claimed 11 total event titles on the day. On the boys side, Mark Deckert won the 100-meter run (11.43) and James Deckert won the 200-meter run (23.28) for individual track titles. Those two, along with Parker Sanderson and Kolter Kramer, also won the 4x100-meter (43.67) and 4x200-meter (1:31.22) relays.
In the field, James Deckert won the long jump (21-8.75), Joaquin Rodriguez won the javelin (133-9) and Mason Jervik won the high jump (6-1).
On the girls side, Ethan/Parkston won two relays. The team of Rory Juhnke, Rachel Klock, Berkley and Lauren Ziebart won the 4x100-meter relay (51.65) and the team of Maddie Nebelsick, Elle Goehring, Rachel Klock and Emelia Tapio won the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (4:44.12). Junke also won the triple jump (33-2) and Berkley Ziebart won the long jump (15-10.75).
Freeman won four event titles on the day. For the boys, Tate Sorensen won the 400-meter run (52.34), Lane McCune won the 3,200-meter run (11:26.74) while the team of Sorensen, Luke Miller, Luke Peters and Braydan Mangel won the 4x400-meter relay (3:36.92). On the girls side, the team of Cadence Hofer, Makenzie Scharberg, Rylee Peters and Vaida Ammann won the 4x200-meter relay (1:51.15).
McCook Central/Montrose was the other area team to win event titles, claiming three boys titles. Jackson Schmidt won the shot put (47-11.75) with a new personal record and the 10th-best throw in Class A this year. Colton Stiefvater won the triple jump (39-3) and he also ran a leg in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (3:54.48) with Lane Deutsch, Jared Elcock and Gavin Kipp.
