As Colts break after minicamp, team with 'detailed plan' for Anthony Richardson
The Indianapolis Colts held their final minicamp practice on Thursday and will now break until July 22nd when they reconvene for training camp.
However, during that time off, the Colts will be in constant communication with Anthony Richardson and his trainers to monitor the progress that his shoulder is making.
"We'll have a plan," Shane Steichen said via Locked on Colts on Thursday. "Obviously, he's got his trainers in Florida, we got our trainers here. We'll have a detailed plan going into this offseason, but we'll be in contact via phone, make sure we're constantly communicating."
Richardson had missed most of OTAs and all of training camp after experiencing pain in the same shoulder that required surgery during his rookie season.
Steichen did confirm earlier in the week that Richardson did get another opinion on his shoulder from Neal ElAttrache, who was the surgeon who performed the initial procedure.
Right now, rest seems to be a big part of the recovery plan, and Steichen wasn't going to put a timeline on when Richardson will return, although a few NFL insiders have reported that they are hearing he will be ready for training camp.
However, even if that is the case, a ramp-up period upon Richardson's return will still be required, as Steichen has said. So, if available on Day 1 of training camp, that doesn't mean he will be a full-go on Day 1 of training camp.
With Richardson sidelined, Daniel Jones has been taking all the first-team reps, and Steichen is "very pleased" with what he's seen. The quarterback competition isn't going to be decided in minicamp, but when Richardson is back, he'll have to make up for lost time.
