Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany on VAR: ‘I don’t think it’s that bad in Germany’
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany spoke to the media in the build up to their Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen this weekend. One of the topics that he was asked about was VAR. After a weekend full of controversies in multiple matches, Leipzig also openly complained about calls that went against them in their DFB-Pokal quarterfinal against Bayern on Monday. Rather than commenting on any specifics, Kompany stayed neutral and compared it to his time in England and Belgium. In his opinion, Germany is doing it better than the other leagues that he has been involved with.
“It was always a subject in England. We’ve got the technology. I’m always in favor of using the technology in the best way possible. I don’t think it’s that bad in Germany. I don’t think VAR gets involved too much. If you compare the interventions with England or Belgium, it’s a lot less here in Germany. There are different ways to look at situations. You should stick with the technology and develop it,” said Kompany (as recorded by @iMiaSanMia).
Among the scrutiny that VAR and referees in general are currently getting, Kompany’s take may be the best feedback they have heard in a while. As often as we here calls from fans — and sometimes players — to get rid of VAR, it is likely not going away. Kompany’s approach of “you should stick with the technology and develop it” is probably the best way to look at it.
