The German champions won all but one of their league-phase matches to qualify automatically for this stage, and they are widely regarded as one of the favourites to win the competition.

Atalanta, on the other hand, produced a remarkable comeback in the playoffs to knock Borussia Dortmund out of the tournament.

Vincent Kompany has received a major boost ahead of the match, with Harry Kane returning to training.

The England striker missed the previous Bundesliga game against Borussia Monchengladbach due to a calf problem, but he has looked sharp in training.

Christian Falk has told CFBayern that Kane has been included in the squad, while there is little doubt that he could feature in the match.

Nicolas Jackson impressed in the previous game in Kane’s absence, although the Chelsea loanee is likely to return to the bench if the England captain starts.

Likewise, Aplhonso Davies completed his third session with the team since his injury, and he will travel as a reserve.

Bayern Munich should start as favourites

The Bavarian giants have won their last six matches in all competitions and are unbeaten in their previous eight, while Atalanta head into the contest without a win in their last three games.

The Serie A club have won three of their five two-legged UEFA ties against German opposition and have also claimed victory in four of their last five meetings with such sides, although they have never faced Bayern before.

Bayern, meanwhile, boast an impressive record against Italian clubs, having lost only two of their last 16 UEFA matches against them.

La Dea have lost the home leg in just five of their 24 previous UEFA two-legged ties, but they are up against a side that have won 13 of their last 14 Champions League round-of-16 ties.
