Bayern Munich ‘won’t be silenced’ amid blowback over refereeing complaints

Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has responded to criticism of the club’s actions following last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen — a match marred, from Bayern’s perspective, by two red cards and disallowed goals.
This week’s opponents, Union Berlin, slammed Bayern’s complaints following the match, with Union director Horst Heldt noting that “it simply carries a different weight when Bayern Munich publicly addresses such topics.”
But Freund isn’t backing down and asserted Bayern’s right — like any other club — to be a part of the conversation when it comes to controversial officiating outcomes.
“There were a lot of emotions and many controversial decisions in Leverkusen,” Freund explained in comments as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We were annoyed and we made that clear. That’s our right, other teams do the same.
“The matter is now settled; referees are an important part of football. It’s important that they are protected so they can perform their duties. They have good and bad days. But as FC Bayern, we will always speak our minds and won’t be silenced.”
While Freund has a point, it is hard to imagine many of his Bundesliga counterparts having pity for the league’s biggest club.
