Ben Johnson explains what he's looking for in Bears' huddle
There are going to be several layers that new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson works to develop second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, and not all of them are going to be obvious to the casual viewer.
Following Johnson's hiring this offseason, he spoke with general manager Ryan Poles spoke about how they plan to rebuild and retool Williams, starting with the basics.
With OTAs underway, the process of developing Williams has started, and the new Bears head coach is paying attention to the huddle and how the process can improve. According to the Chicago Tribune, during Wednesday's practice, Johnson stopped the action when he notice the Bears were sloppy coming out of the huddle. He yelled at Williams and the offense to get back into the huddle and restart.
“There’s a certain way that the play needs to get communicated in the huddle," Johnson said. "There's a certainway that the break should sound to us around. That means that we're ready for business and we're ready to get going. And if it doesn't sound that way then we're just not going to allow the, the practice to go south. Fatigue is something that we're going to combat. The longer practice goes the more fatigued guys get, and the mental toughness has to come through of still doing the little things correctly. So that's a part of it.”
There are plenty of intricate details that Johnson will work on with Williams, and being able to get proper communication in the huddle is an important one. No matter t,k he situation, time, or energy level on the team, Williams will have to prove himself as a team leader and put the offense in a position to succeed.
