Ben Kellaway Shines as Glamorgan and Derbyshire End in a Draw
Ben Kellaway’s standout performance in the Rothesay County Championship saw Glamorgan push Derbyshire to the final delivery in a contest that ended in a draw.
Kellaway hit 78 before taking 5 for 101 in 25 overs to set up a declaration and narrowly missed clinching victory for Glamorgan. With Derbyshire chasing 338 in 65 overs, Kellaway was handed the final over after taking two wickets in consecutive balls and pulled off a stunning comeback after many twists and turns on the closing day.
The 21-year-old narrowly escaped dismissal on 19 when he inadvertently kicked the ball away from his stumps. By lunch, Glamorgan had declared with the experienced keeper on 49 not out after adding 124 runs in 32 overs from the overnight total.
Derbyshire got off to a fast start, with the opening duo quickly establishing their dominance by chalking up a half-century partnership in just 10.5 overs. However, momentum shifted when Ned Leonard struck in his first over, casting doubt over the chase. Wayne Madsen then stepped up with an aggressive 22 off 19 balls, but his innings was cut short by a sharp diving catch from Andy Gorvin at fine leg — Leonard’s second breakthrough.
Kellaway reignited Glamorgan’s hopes twice, with his second revival setting the stage for a potential Derbyshire collapse, motivating Anuj Dal to complete his five-wicket haul, which left Derbyshire nine down with nearly five overs still to survive.
However, Tickner drew on his international experience to hold firm, scoring just 1 run from 10 deliveries with Reece, batting at No. 10. The two survived a tense finish in a final push for victory that ended in a hard-earned draw.
