Big boost for CSK: MS Dhoni likely to play first IPL 2026 game vs Mumbai Indians
NEW DELHI: Former captain MS Dhoni is likely to return for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their IPL 2026 match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 23 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Dhoni had been ruled out for two weeks before the start of the 2026 season due to a calf strain. During his absence, CSK lost their first three matches but have since won two games in a row at home. CSK's next match is against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad.
According to a report in The Indian Express, quoting CSK sources, Dhoni is close to full fitness and could make his return to the side at the Wankhede, the same venue where he led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title.
CSK are currently eighth on the points table, with two wins in five matches under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Ahead of the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Dhoni had a session with CSK batting coach Michael Hussey but did not face frontline bowlers. He also spent time training with left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad.
Dhoni last played for CSK against Mumbai Indians on April 20, 2025, at the Wankhede Stadium, where he scored 4 runs from six balls.
In his absence this season, Sanju Samson has taken up the wicketkeeper-batter role for CSK. Once Dhoni returns, Samson is expected to play as a specialist batter, with Dhoni resuming wicketkeeping duties.
There is also a possibility that the former CSK skipper could be used as an impact player and come in only to bat.
