The Toronto Blue Jays started this offseason on fire with some of their big-time acquisitions this winter. There was also major buzz about the possibility of landing Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette in free agency. However, the Blue Jays came up empty on both, starting with Tucker.
“Kyle Tucker, the consensus best player available in free agency, agreed to join the Dodgers on Thursday, sources told ESPN, a little more than a month after star closer Edwin Diaz did the same. Tucker's deal is for four years at $240 million and includes opt-outs after the second and third seasons, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers,” ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez wrote.
The Blue Jays then set their sights on Bichette, but that quickly turned for the worse as well.
“The New York Mets, in a quick pivot after failing to sign Kyle Tucker, have agreed to a three-year, $126 million contract with infielder Bo Bichette, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.
After missing out on the two biggest targets, Toronto decided not to pursue anyone else. The Blue Jays can still add a rotation arm, and that player could be Max Scherzer.
“Based on their current setup in the rotation, the Blue Jays don’t need to add an elite pitcher from free agency that would demand a multi-year deal such as a Lucas Giolito or Zac Gallen. What Toronto needs is someone that could step in to give valuable starter innings just this one year to help with load management for Bieber as he fully recovers from his ailment. With Scherzer, he can provide exactly that without the Blue Jays having to blow the bank once again this offseason,” Jays Journal’s Edward Eng wrote.
Toronto was able to acquire Dylan Cease this offseason, so they have their top arms in place. But there might not be a better back-end rotation option than Scherzer. The veteran is poised to make an impact if Toronto gives him the chance.
The Blue Jays are looking to get back to the World Series and win it all this time around. Small moves, like adding Scherzer, could go a long way toward that goal.
