Brian Daboll sidesteps starting QB questions after blowout Week 1 loss to Commanders
The vibes were high for the New York Giants after an undefeated preseason. After Week 1, it's hard to imagine them being much lower.
New York dropped its season opener, 21-6, to the Washington Commanders – a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicates. Quarterback wasn't supposed to be a concern for the G-Men in 2025 after adding Russell Wilson in free agency.
Heading into Week 2, it's not a guarantee that he'll start.
Head coach Brian Daboll sidestepped questions about Wilson's status going forward, refusing to commit to the veteran as his starter for Week 2.
"We're going to get home and look at our game," Daboll said after the game when asked if he would consider starting Jaxson Dart next week. "Collectively we all got to do better."
Wilson was 17-of-37 passing for 168 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in his Giants debut. He also added eight carries for 44 rushing yards.
"Yeah, we're just right here after the game," Daboll said. "I've got confidence. ... We have to do better around overall – coaches, players, [all] around everybody. So we'll get focused and ready to go on to Dallas."
Daboll was pushed for a more concrete answer, but continued to be non-committal. He instead said that the outcome of the game was not on Wilson.
"We're talking about after every game. ... I've got confidence in Russ," Daboll said. "We'll go back, evaluate the tape. This game isn't on Russell Wilson. It's not on Russell Wilson. Let me make that clear. I have confidence in Russ. We have to do a better job all the way around."
The quarterback controversy saw more fuel added to the fire after it was revealed that the rookie, Dart, would be the backup to Wilson.
Dart, who starred in the preseason, figures to get into action at some point in the 2025 season and is considered to the Giants quarterback of the future.
After dropping their last three season openers by a combined score of 89-12, the calls for Dart to start will likely only increase as the season goes along.
They might already be too loud heading into Week 2 – especially for a regime that could be on the hot seat sooner than later.
