Brian Kelly talks Nussmeier's inconsistent performance vs Louisiana Tech

Head coach Brian Kelly was the first to say LSU has room for improvement following its 23-7 win over Louisiana Tech.

The offense, more specifically quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, underwhelmed versus a low-tier FBS team. He threw an interception on the opening possession and took multiple sacks.

"I think there's some things that he would wish that he had done better," Kelly said, "Obviously, making good decisions relative to whether you can leave the pocket and pick up some yardage."

Nussmeier was sacked twice in the fourth quarter by a relentless Louisiana Tech pass rush. While he made multiple explosive throws, he averaged just 5.7 yards per pass in the end and never truly settled into the home opener.

But Kelly was quick not to let Nussmeier shoulder all of the blame. Before claiming his responsibility, Kelly took a by-committee approach. LSU dealt with offensive line injuries throughout the game and an inconsistent run game. Outside of two runs of over 40 yards, the Tigers totaled 91 rushing yards.

"That's micro-managing the situation, again," Kelly said. "He's part of everybody. I don't know that there's one guy that you pull out and say, 'well, that's the guy.' He knows he's got to play better, too. I've got to coach better. He's got to play better."
