Bronny James outplays Cooper Flagg in Duke star's NBA summer league debut

In the highly anticipated NBA summer league matchup, Bronny James welcomed Cooper Flagg to the NBA. Cooper Flagg made his highly-anticipated NBA debut. The No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft struggled to get his shot going but still showed why he is an elite pro prospect. Bronny James is still fighting to prove he belongs in the NBA. Thursday night he did that with encouraging defensive plays against the No. 1 pick.

Bronny James scored 8 points and hit a stepback mid-range shot in front of Cooper Flagg, but Bronny's highlights emerged when Flagg had the ball and James was simply a stonewall presence who did not let Flagg, a bigger man, go anywhere.

In a reaction to the game, Bergas Agung discussed his thoughts on Bronny's performance while also sharing Laker analyst Mike Bresnahan's insights.

"Bronny James faced his own offensive challenges, scoring just eight points on 25% shooting. His missed three-pointer in the final seconds that could have secured victory for the Lakers highlighted his shooting inconsistencies. Despite the offensive struggles, Bronny’s defensive effort against a player labeled as generational created significant praise. He showed a lot of promise in the area that he really wants to improve. Lakers analyst Mike Bresnahan said that Bronny has a lot of confidence in the moments that matter most.

“I did like Bronny taking that last shot, Lakers down, winding down eight seconds left, when he got the ball in his hands above the arc. He’s like, ‘this is my shot’. He didn’t make it but the mindset, yeah, let’s win the game. I’m going to do this.”

Bresnahan noticed significant physical development in Bronny James since the Lakers’ season ended.

“Talking to him last week, he’s a very confident young man, and he’s been working on stuff just in a few months since the Lakers season ended, and we saw a good glimpse of that. You can tell there’s more strength there, and he’s played about 21-22 minutes.”

Bresnahan believes Bronny’s improved conditioning signals expectations for a bigger role next season. The 20-year-old guard’s focus on physical preparation suggests he’s preparing for increased responsibilities."

Even with the early offensive struggles for Bronny James, he still has shown flashes of being a high quality rotational player. His great athleticism on defense offers hope that he can continue to develop and end up being a player who makes a substantial contribution in the NBA.

It will take some more development for James, but the resources he has around him give him the chance to create a meaningful NBA future as a defensive stopper.
