Browns must avoid Jeremiyah Love for many reasons; including this one

The conversation started earlier this week about the Cleveland Browns being interested in drafting running back Jeremiyah Love with their number six pick. There are about 100 reasons why this is a horrible idea for this version of the Cleveland Browns, but thanks to the thought, there was a very interesting stat that surfaced.

Love was an amazing player in his three years at Notre Dame. When he gets the ball in his hands, he is electric and simply always finds ways to get into the endzone. He finished his career in South Bend with 2,882 yards on 433 carries, which is good for a career average of 6.7 yards per rush. He had 36 touchdowns on the ground and six more through the air. He is as dynamic as they come.

However, since 1990, there have only been two running backs drafted in the top-10 who have won Super Bowls with the team that drafted them. The first was Jamal Lewis, who was drafted by the Ravens with the fifth overall pick in the 2000 draft, and then they went on to win the Super Bowl that season.

Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (4) runs with the ball during the first half of a NCAA football game against Navy at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, in South Bend.

The second player to do it was Reggie Bush, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. The Saints went on to win the 2010 Super Bowl, but the asterisk here is that Bush wasn't even the leading rusher on the Super Bowl team.

The other top-10 drafted backs to win Super Bowls are Jerome Bettis, Saquon Barkley, Marshall Faulk, and Leonard Fournette, who all won Super Bowls with different teams than the ones that drafted them.

Why the Browns must avoid Jeremiyah Love

Do I think that Jeremiyah Love is going to be a dynamic player in the NFL? Absolutely. Will it be an unmitigated disaster if Cleveland drafts him with the sixth pick? Absolutely.

Now, Love is one of the couple of players that if he drops to pick No. 6, he could be incredible trade bait for the Browns to strike a deal if they want to move back. The select players on that list are one of the four Ohio State Buckeyes and Jeremiyah Love.

There are not many blue-chip prospects that teams are going to spend a lot of resources to get into the top-10 of the draft. Love is absolutely one of those players, and if he is still alive at pick No. 6, Cleveland may be able to find a partner to trade with.

If they can't find a trade partner, they simply cannot and will not draft him.

The teams that are drafting running backs have a ready-made roster, and they are able to draft the best players available. The Browns are not in that position, and they must address positional needs in this draft.
