Busy coaching high school football, Teddy Bridgewater may not have time for Saints
The New Orleans Saints could use another quarterback in the room after Derek Carr announced his retirement, but it doesn't sound like Teddy Bridgewater is an option. The former Saints backup remains a popular presence among Saints fans, and his star has only risen higher after he returned to lead his alma mater to a Florida state championship as their head football coach. Bridgewater unretired to join the Detroit Lions in time for their playoff run, but these days his focus is squarely on the young athletes at Miami Northwestern High School.
On the same afternoon Carr shared news of his retirement, Bridgewater was busy conducting his team's first spring scrimmage. He's been busy recruiting transfers this spring, too, including four-star defensive lineman James Johnson and 2028 quarterback prospect Neimann Lawrence, who has drawn a lot of interest from colleges around the country. Bridgewater is loading up for a repeat as Class 3A state champs, and he's even set his sights on opening his season against a national opponent.
There are other reasons to think the Saints couldn't talk Bridgewater out of coaching beyond his commitment to Miami Northwestern. He knew the Lions playbook Ben Johnson drew up inside and out, having helped install it as a backup in Detroit prior to retirement. That isn't the case with Kellen Moore running the show in New Orleans. Bridgewater would have to learn another new system on the fly on top of leaving his high school players without their head coach. That just doesn't make sense for him. So while the Saints may add a veteran backup to their QB room this summer, don't hold your breath waiting for it to be Teddy Bridgewater.
