Caitlin Clark Reacts to Iowa Basketball’s Coaching Move on Monday
On Monday afternoon, the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team announced that Sydney Affolter will be joining their coaching staff and has been named a graduate student employee for the 2025-2026 school year.
“We are thrilled to have Sydney join our staff in this capacity,” said head coach Jan Jensen in a press release. “Sydney has been a tremendous leader for our program, and I am excited to continue to utilize her skillset as she begins her coaching career. I know our Hawkeye fans will also love continuing to see Syd involved with our program.”
Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever's star basketball player who previously played with Iowa from 2020 to 2024, reposted the news on her Instagram story two hours after it was announced on social media.
Before joining the Fever in 2024, Clark guided Iowa to consecutive national championship games in 2023 and 2024. She also became the NCAA's all-time leading scorer with 3667 points in 83 games, surpassing both men's and women's records.
Clark's former Iowa teammate averaged a career-high 8.5 points and 7.8 rebounds on the year. Affolter completed her fourth and final season with the Hawkeyes in 2024-25, earned honorable mention All-Big Ten distinction from the media and was selected as Iowa’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient. She graduated this May with a bachelor’s degree in sport and recreation management.
“I’m beyond excited to remain with a program that has given me so much,” Affolter said in a press release. “It’s an honor to give back and support this team in a new role. I can’t wait to get started. As always, Go Hawks!”
