When the Arizona Cardinals drafted Kyler Murray with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, they believed he would be the franchise quarterback they desperately needed. They envisioned the former Oklahoma Sooners' two-sport star to lead them to the promised land.
Unfortunately for Murray and the Cards, things haven't really turned out that way. Despite being named the Offensive Rookie of the Year and a two-time Pro Bowler, the team hasn't had a winning season since 2001.

Injuries and inconsistency have plagued Murray in recent years. Now, in 2025, he sees himself being benched in favor of journeyman signal-caller Jacoby Brissett, heading into Week 10 of the NFL slate.
"QB news in Arizona: Cardinals are sticking with QB Jacoby Brissett as their starter for Sunday’s game in Seattle," NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted on X.
While Brissett is certainly not a long-term answer for Arizona, his spelling of Murray for a few weeks could be a wake-up call to the once-promising passer. Murray is under contract until 2028, and it's doubtful the team could get a huge return for him in an offseason deal, so he will likely remain with the team heading into 2026. However, his status for the remainder of this season is a mystery at this time.
The Cardinals could shop around for a veteran 'street free agent' to help finish off the year, but none of them would be considered a reasonable replacement for Murray in the long term.
