Chargers remain undecided on fifth-year option for Quentin Johnston

The Chargers' front office remains undecided on whether to exercise the fifth-year option for wide receiver Quentin Johnston, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.

The fifth-year option for Johnston will cost $15,935,000 for the 2027 season. Because Johnston has met certain playing-time thresholds but has not yet earned a Pro Bowl nod, his option falls into "Tier 3" of the NFL's structured compensation scale.

Johnston showed improvement in his third season, posting solid numbers with 51 receptions for 735 yards and eight touchdowns across 14 games.

General Manager Joe Hortiz may wait until after the 2026 NFL Draft and initial free agency moves before finalizing the decision.

"We haven't had talks about that yet. Again, it's early, but I'll say this: I love Q and the growth he's made. The development he's made from year one to year three has been awesome to see. I'm a big fan of Q's," Hortiz said about Johnston at his end-of-season press conference in January.

The team has until May 1 to make a final determination on the 2023 first-round pick.
