Chelsea Lost EPL-Record $349 Million During 2024-25 Season

The Premier League’s Chelsea FC lost £264 million ($359 million based on current exchange rates) during the 2024-25 season, the club reported Wednesday—a record pre-tax loss for an EPL team, topping Manchester City’s deficit during the 2010-11 season.

Chelsea now has four of the six biggest losses in EPL history, according to soccer finance expert Kieran Maguire.

The 2024-25 loss compares to a profit of £128.4 million ($171 million) the previous year. That figure was skewed, though, as it included the profit from a sale of Chelsea Football Club Women Ltd to Blueco 22 Midco Limited for $257 million. Basically, Chelsea’s owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, sold the women’s team to themselves, and the deal helped the team comply with the EPL’s financial fair play rules.

The prior year Chelsea sold a pair of hotels to a related company for $101 million to comply with profit and sustainability rules.

During the 24-25 season, Chelsea men’s team finished fourth in the Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League, and won both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.

Chelsea revenue for the 2024-25 season rose 5% to $653 million, driven largely by higher broadcast revenue from the team’s fourth-place finish in the Premier League and the team’s participation and victory in the Club World Cup. It marked Chelsea’s second-highest revenue all-time.

Matchday revenue rose 8% to $115 million, and the profit on player sales was $77 million.

The women’s team won a record-breaking eighth WSL title during the 2024-25 season, and revenue soared roughly 85% to $28 million, primarily driven by increased sponsorships. Yet costs also jumped, triggering an overall loss of $23 million.

The current season has been rocky as the men’s team fired head coach Enzo Maresca in January, and the team sits sixth in the EPL table. Chelsea’s women’s side is second in the standings, but it just saw the sudden departure of Paul Green, the executive widely credited for turning the squad into a WSL juggernaut.
