Chicago Bears sign second-round pick Ozzy Trapilo to rookie contract

The Chicago Bears have signed second-round offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo to his rookie contract, according to Albert Breer.

It's a four-year deal with the first two years fully guaranteed, per Breer, and the third year is 72% guaranteed. Trapilo is just the fourth second-round pick to sign this offseason.

The move comes after a delay in second-round picks signing contracts as they were seeking fully-guaranteed deals like first-round selections receive. While Houston Texans receiver Jayden Higgins and Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger were awarded fully-guaranteed deals, San Francisco 49ers’ second-round pick Alfred Collins broke the cycle with a mostly-guaranteed contract and kickstarted a trend of second-round signings.

Trapilo, the 56th overall selection, has the opportunity to serve a prominent role in his rookie season. He's competing for the starting left tackle job with three-year starter Braxton Jones (who's recovering from a fractured fibula) and second-year pro Kiran Amegadjie. If Trapilo wins the starting job, he'll have one of the most important jobs on the entire team -- protecting Williams' blindside.

Following Trapilo's signing, the Bears have seven rookie draft picks under contract ahead of training camp. Second-rounders Luther Burden III remains unsigned. Rookies are set to report on Saturday while veterans report three days later next Tuesday.
