Clemson basketball drops third in a row with loss to Wake Forest

The Clemson Tigers (20-7, 10-4 ACC) fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (14-12, 5-8 ACC), 85-77, on Wednesday night at JVLM Coliseum in Winston-Salem. The loss marks the third straight for the Tigers, knocking them down to fourth in the conference standings.

Wake Forest had control the entire game, earning a double-digit lead in the first eight minutes of the matchup. They led by as many as 17 in the first half, and 20 in the second. Clemson was able to cut the lead to two possessions briefly, but a quick Wake Forest run put the game away well before it was officially over.

Wake Forest’s 85 points scored were the most Clemson has allowed from an ACC opponent. They shot 55% from the field, and 45% from 3-point range.

Jake Wahlin shined, putting up a 17-5, going seven of 11 from the field and three of seven from 3-point range. Carter Welling and Ace Buckner starred as well, each with 13 points on four of nine shooting.

Clemson is now fourth in the conference standings, with games against UNC and Louisville coming up in the next couple of weeks. Both the Cardinals and Tar Heels sit behind the Tigers in the ACC standings with an easy pathway to jump ahead of Clemson by the end of the regular season. The Tigers need to find their footing quickly to avoid a late-season collapse as we approach the postseason.

Clemson will return home to face off against Florida State (13-13, 6-7 ACC) on Saturday at noon ET.
