Coach gives thoughts on potential Sixers draft prospect Derik Queen

The Philadelphia 76ers will have plenty of options to choose from in the 2025 NBA draft should they end up keeping their top 6 protected pick when the lottery rolls around on May 12. The Sixers will be looking to add some much-needed young talent to the roster as they move forward.

If the Sixers end up keeping their pick and end up landing somewhere in the 4-5-6 range, there will be options for them to look at when considering how deep this draft is expected to be.

For example, a guy like Maryland big man, Derik Queen, makes a lot of sense for this group. The Sixers can always use depth at the center position behind Joel Embiid so one has to believe they will at least consider him.

A coach gave thoughts on Queen in an interview with HoopsHype:

A coach told HoopsHype on Queen: “I don’t think that Derik Queen is the best big in the draft. That’s basically the argument, he is also going to be 21 during his rookie season. He’s a grown man out there. Yeah, he’s the safe pick –polished, strong in the post, but doesn’t have a ton of upside.”

Queen's age does limit him some. He will turn 21 in December, but he was terrific for the Terrapins in 2024-25 averaging 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks. He isn't much of a shooter--20% from deep-- but he is an all-around versatile offensive player who should be able to produce at the next level. The Sixers are always looking for more depth and Queen fits that role.
