Commanders are now the worst team in the NFC East
The Washington Commanders are the worst team in the NFC East after losing to the Cowboys 44-22 on Sunday in Dallas.
The Cowboys could have hung 50 points on the Commanders on Sunday. The only reason they did not is that they became conservative in the final quarter, choosing to run the ball much more often and chew up the clock. The Cowboys evened up their record at 3-3-1, while the Commanders, who won 12 games in 2024, fell to 3-4.
The explosive plays this team surrenders continue to be embarrassing. Washington trailed only 20-15 with 45 seconds remaining in the half. When the Cowboys went 72 yards in only four plays to score with 10 seconds remaining in the half, extending their lead to 27-15. It was infuriating to watch.
To make matters worse, Jayden Daniels was hit and fumbled early in the third quarter and was injured on the play, instantly grabbing the back of his leg. It wasn't certain if he was holding the lower hamstring or the back of his knee. Daniels was taken to the locker room and did not return.
Defensive end Dorance Armstrong, who had produced six quarterback sacks in six games, was not able to practice all week. Apparently, he wanted to give it a go and was immediately injured, taken to the locker room, and did not return. Why was this allowed to occur? This team must also question the wisdom of those who have the power to make that decision. Did the medical team actually tell the coaches he was cleared to play? And this, after he couldn't practice all week? What is going on, resulting in such a poor decision?
Soul searching needs to be a central theme this week. Why, when the Cowboys crowded the line of scrimmage in the first half, could the Commanders not move the ball through the air? Could the Commanders' receivers simply not get open for Daniels?
Defensively, how many times are coaches going to permit Marshon Lattimore to be a hindrance to the pass coverage for this team? How many times is he going to be allowed to hold, interfere with and never turn around to play the ball?
The Commanders put Dorance Armstrong out there on Sunday. Why would they put Jayden Daniels out there next week? In a third and long passing situation, why was Bobby Wagner still in the game? It certainly wasn't to provide pass coverage. When do we start making decisions based on what is best for the future of this franchise?
Kansas City is up next week; it won't be pretty, but again, at this point, what is motivating the decisions coaches make?
We know the New York Giants are 2-5, but they are making progress. The Commanders, at 3-4, are heading in the wrong direction.
