Commanders make two interesting roster moves ahead of Thursday Night Football

The Commanders made two interesting roster moves, Thursday afternoon.

The Commanders elevated center Michael Deiter and punter Mitch Wishnowsky from the practice squad. The elevation of Deiter is noteworthy because it marks the second time in two games that Washington has moved Deiter up. NFL rules permit only three games during the regular season, can a player be moved up to the 53-man roster and then returned to the practice squad. If there is a fourth time, the Commanders wish to elevate Deiter, then they will not be permitted to return him to the practice squad simply.

Does this suggest starting center Tyler Biadasz is playing injured and the team fears he could go down, and they want to be insured at the position the best way possible for them, under their current roster/practice squad construction? Commanders fans who follow the team closely will recall that when Biadasz missed two games last season, the offense struggled. He was a really good Adam Peters signing from the Dallas Cowboys.

The second move tells us Tress Way is having difficulty. When does an NFL team want to have two punters on its 53-man roster? Teams debate whether to keep a third quarterback on their 53-man roster, but when was the last time you heard a team discussing whether they were going to keep a second punter on the active roster?

This most likely means Way will attempt to warm up on Lambeau Field prior to tonight's game, and a decision will be made accordingly to how he feels, how he loosens up, and how he strikes the ball. The positive is that if Way has difficulty, enough to prevent him from performing well, the Commanders have the position of punter covered for the night, and they will have the extended week for Way to recover in time for the Week 3 home contest against the Raiders.

Luke McCaffrey will be the holder on field goals and extra points, should Way not be ready to go tonight against the Packers.
