Commanders showing 'extensive interest' in one of draft's top kickers
There are two things that it seems the Washington Commanders have been chasing forever: a quarterback and a kicker. Fortunately for the Commanders, they found their quarterback in 2024. Jayden Daniels led Washington to its first NFC Championship Game in 33 years.
The search for a kicker is still ongoing. The Commanders have had successful kickers over the years, such as Graham Gano and Dustin Hopkins, but would eventually move on, thinking the next guy would be better. That's why the kicking position has been a revolving door over the years.
Currently, Jake Moody is Washington's kicker. A 2023 third-round pick, Moody has the talent. And he kicked well for the Commanders after signing last season. However, GM Adam Peters knows all too well that Moody must find long-term consistency. He will compete for Washington's job in 2026. Will he compete against a veteran, or, maybe a rookie?
Per NFL draft analyst Ryan Fowler, the Commanders are one of five teams showing interest in Houston kicker Ethan Sanchez.
The Eagles, Commanders, Falcons and 49ers have shown extensive interest in Houston kicker Ethan Sanchez, per sources.
A Lou Groza Award semifinalist (nation’s top K), Sanchez recently had an hour-long call with the Eagles and also met privately following Pro Day.

After spending his first three seasons at Old Dominion, the Dallas, Georgia, native transferred to Houston in 2025. In his lone season for the Cougars, Sanchez made 21 of his 26 field goal attempts and all 43 point-after attempts. His longest field goal was from 52 yards out.
At Houston's pro day, Sanchez made nine of 12 attempts, with a long of 55 yards.

Other top kicking prospects include Drew Stevens (Iowa), Trey Smack (Florida) and Dominic Zvada (Michigan). Perhaps the most intriguing prospect is Jaffer Murphy from UTSA.
Washington's interest in Sanchez could indicate that Peters is looking to invest in a kicker to compete with Moody this season.
