Cowboys Bullish On Tight End Room Amid Depth Chart Changes

Cowboys Bullish On Tight End Room Amid Depth Chart Changes originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

As we turned for training camp in Oxnard, there were many positions that fans were going to keep a close eye on for the Dallas Cowboys, but tight end wasn't one of them.

Well, it might be now.

With Jake Ferguson, the leader of the room, agreeing to a four-year, $52 million deal, those behind him have been making some noise, particularly Brevyn Spann-Ford, who right now, could easily be seen as TE2, ahead of Luke Schoonmaker, who himself is looking better and better.

But for head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the room as a whole has him excited.

“Honestly, that room is so exciting for us to watch because it's a young room,” Schottenheimer said. “Brevyn Spann-Ford makes a huge play yesterday. Schoony, he's playing with as much confidence as he has. Princeton Fant, I just see him growing, he's got the playbook down now, which is exciting for me.

"Some of the young guys they're getting their feet wet. Valdo [Rivaldo Fairweather] and Tyler Neville. So, exciting room. You got to talk about Hunter Luepke, he's playing some tight end as well. Very competitive room, but a young room, which is exciting.”

At present, there is a depth-chart shuffle happening. Spann-Ford was winning the No. 2 job, but he's now out for two weeks with an ankle injury. That's opened up more chances for Schoonmaker, the 2024 second-rounder, and he's taken advantage.

On Monday, John Stephens, coming back from injury, got involved ... so add him to the "maybe'' list.

With the Cowboys now having three bona fide tight ends who can block well in the run game, but now, in Spann-Ford and Schoonmaker's case, are developing as pass-catchers, and at a quick rate, Dak Prescott is going to have a lot of weapons at his disposal.

Spann-Ford has been the name we have heard consistently who has made play after play in Oxnard, and with his 6-7, 270-pound frame, he looms as a monster in the red zone and a matchup nightmare. ... once he gets healthy.

So, things are moving along well for the Cowboys in Oxnard, and yes, there might be other position battles going on, but tight end deserves some attention as well.
