Cyclones defeat Arizona by 25
A balanced offensive attack behind five double-digit scorers, and a 27-14 advantage in the second quarter, led the Iowa State Cyclones (16-5, 4-5 Big 12) past the Arizona Wildcats (10-9, 1-7 Big 12) for their second straight win Saturday afternoon. Due to five Wildcats fouling out, and Tanyuel Welch leaving the game due to injury, Arizona played the final 2:40 with four players on the court.
In the win, Iowa State led for 38:59, trailed for 32 seconds and played a tied game for 29 seconds.
Jada Williams led the Cyclones with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field while grabbing four rebounds with seven assists against her former team. Williams didn’t take part in the morning shoot around due to illness.
“We found out probably 45 minutes before the game that she wanted to try it,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “She’s a tough kid. She loves to play. She’s as tough as any kid on our team. She’ll probably tell me she had seven turnovers because she was sick, but she’s a baller.”
Audi Crooks scored 17 points. Arianna Jackson contributed 15 points and connected on four 3-point field goals. Off the bench, Sydney Harris scored 14 points and Alisa Williams tallied 12 points.
Iowa State held a six point lead, 21-15 with 1:55 remaining in the first quarter, and over the next 3:33 the Cyclones went on a 10-0 run.
The Cyclones’ lead in the second quarter shrunk to 10, 35-25, with 5:43 remaining in the first half. A quick 9-0 run over the following 99 seconds kept Iowa State up at least 17 points for the remainder of the game. At halftime, Iowa State held a 24 point advantage (53-29). In the second quarter, the Cyclones outscored the Wildcats 27-14 and scorched the nylon with a 10-of-12 mark from the field, including a 4-of-5 clip outside the arc.
Iowa State upped their cushion to 23 points seven times in the third quarter, including as high as 24 points twice (59-35 and 70-46).
Arizona scored six of the first eight points in the fourth quarter, but on the day it was the quietest quarter as the teams combined for 28 points with the Cyclones scoring 15 of those points and the Wildcats scoring 13 points.
