Dan Quinn likes the competition along Commanders' offensive line for 2025

How does Dan Quinn feel about the Commanders offensive line?

On Thursday, as the Commanders concluded their offseason team workout program, Quinn was asked about the offensive line. Yes, in the offseason, GM Adam Peters traded for OT Laremy Tunsil and drafted OT Josh Conerly in the first round. Peters also addressed guard when he signed NFL veteran guard Nate Herbig to a free-agent deal.

But they also lost right guard Sam Cosmi in a playoff win over the Lions in Detroit. So, how does Quinn feel about the team's offensive line following the workouts?

“Yeah, I know that with [G] Sam [Cosmi], he's hitting all the benchmarks, but when does that get there? I don't know."

Quinn is correct to make a distinction between where Cosmi is now and where he hopes Cosmi is in two months. "I'm not there yet to know, we're not going to miss one step with him." Yes, Quinn knows Cosmi was his anchor on the line in Quinn's first Washington season. So, why would he risk getting Cosmi out there early? The risk would be too great. Make sure Cosmi is healed before he sees game action.

"What I do know is that I love the competition that we have on the offensive line right now at guards and centers, and who's playing that right tackle, and how are we working through the guys?" Quinn can't help but be encouraged about where the team is at tackle right now. Tunsil is a proven veteran, and Conerly looked good for a rookie this past week.

"So, it'll take some work as we're going through into training camp, but those are the types of challenges you want as a coach [laughs]. It's not, ‘Who in the hell is going to play over here?’ It's more like, ‘This is going to be an absolute battle to see where it goes.’ So, that's most of the times been my experience, where the competition of one another really pushes us forward and the whole group gets better.”

Yes, in year two, Quinn knows that with the additions of Tunsil and Conerly, his starting tackles are much better. He also has Brandon Coleman moving inside to guard, and Herbig has also played well at guard. Then, perhaps in the last third or fourth of the season, he may have Cosmi available again to play guard.

Quinn is smiling about his offensive line tonight.
