Danny Olsen Breaks Two Marquette Track & Field Records
If you break two school records in one day, that’s a pretty good meet.
For Marquette’s Danny Olsen, doing that at the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships is an even better day.
On Friday, Olsen got his day started with a 47.39 in the 400 meters prelims in order to qualify for Saturday’s championship race. That bested Olsen’s own school record set on January 31st at Notre Dame of 47.48, which itself broke the record of 47.97 set by Zachariah Murray at the 2024 Big East Indoor Championships.
That didn’t tire Olsen out too much, as he fired off a 21.29 in the 200 meters prelims, which again pushed him through to Saturday’s finals. That had to be a goal for Olsen going into the meet as he hit 21.55 at that same Notre Dame meet in late January, which was the second best time in school history. Aaron Hughes set the school record at 21.37 just one year ago at the Big East Indoor Championships.
Everyone tip your cap to Frankie McGee, who ran new personal bests in both events to get to the finals as well, but has to settle for “only” seventh best ever in the 400 and third best in the 200. Blake Frea won’t advance to the finals in the 400, but still pulled up with the eighth fastest time in school history.
Marquette got a trio of third place finishes to lead the way in events that were finalized on Day 1 of the championships. Kaitlyn Huebner had a PR of 3.65 in the pole vault to move to #9 on the MU all time list, while Henrik Rosario went 6.96 meters in the long jump and Megan White reached 16.73 meters in the weight throw.
With six events scored, the Marquette women sit in fifth place after the first day of competition with 22 points. UConn leads the pack there with 88 points. On the men’s side, Marquette is in fourth place with 21 points, trailing the 57 tallied by UConn.
Day 2 of competition begins at 11am Central on February 28th at the Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center in Chicago. ESPN+ has the streaming broadcast if you’re so inclined. You can keep track of the live scoring and schedule over here.
