Diamond Heels split final home series with NC State

The college baseball regular season is winding down as we are approaching mid-May May and for the North Carolina Tar Heels, their final home weekend series of the year was shortened. The Diamond Heels were set to host NC State for a three-game series this weekend in Chapel Hill but only two of the three games got in.

With both teams winning a game going into Sunday's rubber match, first pitch was delayed a few times before being cancelled due to weather. Now, UNC heads into the final week looking to finish strong before the ACC Tournament.

Game 1: UNC 8, NC State 1

The Tar Heels got this series started off with a bang. After both teams plated a run in the first inning, UNC broke it open by scoring one in the second, two in the third, and three in the fifth. From there, it was all Tar Heels.

UNC had 12 hits in the game and starting pitcher Jake Knapp threw eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits on what was an awesome performance. It was much-needed for the Tar Heels as they wanted to start this series off on the right foot.

Game 2: NC State 8, UNC 5

Friday was a game of missed chances for UNC. NC State once again scored in the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead and then added on with a three-run fifth inning. Down 4-0 and the bats going cold, UNC rallied.

They scored three in the seventh inning to cut the lead down to one run and then tied the game at five with a two-run eighth inning. However, NC State got three runs in the top of the ninth against the UNC bullpen to even the series and get a big win.

North Carolina returns to action this week when they host UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday and then they will wrap up the regular season with a road series at Florida State this weekend.
