Eagles' Saquon Barkley Reveals Religious Journey
Eagles' Saquon Barkley Reveals Religious Journey originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Added to his almost supernatural physical talents and the savvy free-agent signing with the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason, Saquon Barkley is crediting another secret weapon for his epic 2024 season:
Religion.
In a new interview with golf social media influencer Grant Horvat, Barkley opened up about his new-found faith and credited it with helping him have one of the best seasons by a running back in NFL history.
"I just became a Christian not too long ago," Barkley said. "I don't think it's a coincidence that the best year I had in my career, I found my faith. It gives me some clarity in life."
Barkley rushed for 2,006 yards last season and helped the Eagles win the Super Bowl in a 40-22 romp over the Kansas City Chiefs last February.
Why a "God" would individually bless a gifted millionaire like Barkley but also allow two hurricanes - Milton and Helene - to track the same path in Florida in a two-week span last Fall to leave hundreds dead and thousands homeless - not to mention the devastation of several churches - remains one of life's great mysteries.
Barkley's religious journey is not an overnight success. At Super Bowl LIX he talked about diving into The Bible.
"I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I know the Bible, like, in and out," Barkley said. "It’s something I’m learning, I’m challenging myself to get better at with my family and my friends. I’m just growing, and I think that’s the beautiful thing about it, and I think that’s what religion and faith is, is having a relationship with God and understanding who Jesus is, and that’s what I’ve been trying to do this year. I’m going to continue to try to get better at it."
Last month, the 28-year-old landed on the cover for this year’s edition of the uber-popular “Madden” video game. Barkley was also a featured speaker at “Life Surge: Champions of Faith,” a religious financial seminar at Philadelphia’s 21,000-seat Wells Fargo Center.
