Emmanuel Acho: Dusty May's work at Michigan not talked about enough

While rival fans and some other teams are crying about Michigan basketball's national championship, the real ball-knowers are coming out and stating facts.

The Wolverines have finished the 2025-26 season not only as the best team via KenPom, it's perhaps the best team of all time -- they were that good that the conversation is worth having. But credit doesn't just go to the players who made it happen; head coach Dusty May turned a fledgling team around that had cratered under the previous regime, not only making it viable, but making it this dominant.

Former ESPN and Fox Sports personality Emmanuel Acho laid out the case for May's greatness.

"What Dusty May has done in Michigan does not get talked about enough," Acho said. "Two years ago, that program was 8-24 under Juwan Howard. You win 27 games the next year, and now you win 36 games this year.

"An absolutely dominant performance. Five consecutive tournament games where you score 90-plus points. I mean, you are beating teams down like Arizona that we thought oh this team is competent, this team is confident and you just completely undress that team. Then you face UConn with one of the best coaches in all of basketball, college or professional, and you find a way to dominate that game throughout the majority of the game, really holding that lead and holding the confidence of that game.

"What Dusty May did at Michigan, you can't talk enough about. 36 wins, most in program history, and a program that basketball is known for, the Fab Five, and rightfully so. Dusty May just said you know what, let me add another chip to the incredible prowess of what Michigan is doing. Think about this for a moment. Michigan has a championship in football within the last three years, and now you have a championship in basketball about two years later or two calendar years later. Absolute dominance in the two biggest sports in college in North America.

"So kudos to Michigan, kudos to Dusty May, and I got to say it, 'Go Blue.'"

The Wolverines closed out their dominant run in the regular season and NCAA Tournament with a gritty 69-63 win over UConn in the national championship game. It was the second national championship for the maize and blue, and first since 1989.
