Ethan Ennis has spoken about how his loan move to Fleetwood Town helped him grow, sharing the progress he’s made over the past year.

There are several Manchester United players currently out on loan this season.

For players like Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, the goal is to secure a permanent move away from Old Trafford. But for youngsters like Ethan Ennis and Enzo Kana-Biyik, the hope is to use these opportunities to earn a spot in United’s first-team squad down the line.

Not all loan moves work out as planned. Some provide valuable experience and regular minutes, while others get derailed by issues like injuries. Harry Amass’s spell at Norwich City has been hampered by fitness problems since January.

After a solid loan stint at Doncaster last season, Ennis has kept up his form with Fleetwood Town in League Two.

The 21-year-old, who moved to United’s academy from Liverpool in 2021, has mainly been used as a wing-back for the Cod Army.

He’s made 28 appearances so far this season and is settling into the new role well.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Ennis discussed how he’s adjusted to playing in a different position since his move and how it’s paid off. “The old gaffer was here when I first came in,” he said.

“He mentioned that he played with a back five, but he was bringing me in to have the option to play a four as well.”

“I played in the 10 a couple of times earlier in the season, but, as I said before, circumstances led me to play at wing-back.”

This shift has helped Ennis grow as a player, making him more adaptable. Above all else, though it’s given him consistent senior football experience.

Ennis credits Ruud van Nistelrooy and Bruno Fernandes for their support at United

During the same interview, Ennis spoke about his experiences at United, specifically mentioning the guidance he received from experienced figures within the squad.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was praised for his involvement with young players during his time on the coaching staff, while Bruno Fernandes was also highlighted for his ongoing support.

Ennis added: “For the short time Ruud was there, he was always good with the young lads.”

“I think he was very positive and was a ‘look on the bright side’ kind of coach. He wanted to get the best out of people. Bruno [Fernandes] has always got time for the lads from the academy as well.”
