Fernando Mendoza has his Heisman campaign slogan, but what does Indiana quarterback think of it?

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football quarterback Fernando Mendoza might be too modest to discuss himself as a Heisman Trophy candidate, but the sold-out crowd of 55,165 fans at Memorial Stadium didn't have any of the same reservations on Saturday.

They student section led chants of "HeisMendoza" during a 38-13 win over Michigan State with Mendoza putting up 332 yards passing and four touchdowns.

"I did hear on the field," Mendoza said. "I want to give a shout out to the student section for sticking through the rain, and the shirtless towel waving, that was fantastic to see them. All the players on the sidelines were hyped about it, it got myself juiced, the offense juiced, the team juiced."

Fans had to clear the stadium during halftime with lightning in the area while the teams were in the locker room. The student section was fired up when they got back to their seats for the second half and they were engaged in the game through the rain until the final buzzer.

"What a great sight to see. We do have a lot of season left," Mendoza said with a smile.

Mendoza was a bit more tight-lipped about a potential Heisman candidacy. He's shied away from taking about any kind of individual accolades throughout the season — he won six national awards and Big Ten co-Player of the Week after beating Illinois — and stuck to that strategy after the game on Saturday.

"Right now, I'm just focused on UCLA," Mendoza said. "We have so many great players on our team that I think we play even better when we play as one. Whatever spotlight that I might get from the offense's success, I'm trying to dish it out to all my teammates. They really deserve it."
