Final 2025 Home News Tribune Greater Middlesex Conference and area UCC softball Top 10

1. St. Thomas Aquinas (19-6) - preseason No. 1 — The Trojans claimed their sixth Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament title in seven years and 11th overall with a veteran squad that only graduated one senior in 2024. St. Thomas also captured the top-level Red Division crown and posted impressive, non-conference victories over Watchung Hills, Hightstown, Robbinsville and Morris Catholic, before falling to eventual runner-up Donovan Catholic in the Non-Public A state tournament.

2. South Plainfield (17-6) - preseason No. 2 — The Tigers captured the North 2 Group 3 title for their first sectional crown since 2017, as Nicole Swatko’s perfect game boosted them over Summit in the final. South Plainfield lost to St. Thomas Aquinas in the GMCT final after dealing the Trojans’ their lone regular-season setback, in April.

3. East Brunswick (23-4) - preseason No. 6 — The White Division champs got off to a 12-0 start and reached 20-1, but lost three of its last five, including one-run losses in the GMCT and sectional semifinals. The Bears return three of their four All-Division honorees, including the area’s top freshman in pitcher/outfielder Christina Lee.

4. Monroe (12-10) - preseason unranked — The Falcons finished in a three-way tie for third place in the Red Division after defeating Spotswood three times, and battled St. Thomas for five scoreless innings in the GMCT semifinals before dropping a taut 2-0 decision. Another squad with a fab freshman in shortstop Brianna Bukowczyk.

5. Sayreville (14-9) -preseason No. 7 — The White Division runners-up would have won the league if not for two one-run losses to East Brunswick. The Bombers fell to the Bears again in the GMCT quarterfinals and defeated Old Bridge in the state tournament before falling to Hightstown in the sectional quarterfinals.

6. Spotswood (13-13) - preseason No. 3 — The Chargers struggled at times after being promoted to the Red Division and suffered their third loss to Monroe in the GMCT quarterfinals before falling in the opening round of the state tournament to Holmdel. Though ace Ava Mormile graduates, Spotswood retains one of the area’s elite players in sophomore shortstop Gabrielle Hill.

7. Colonia (15-12) - preseason No. 9 — The Patriots shared second place in the White Division with Sayreville, which they lost to twice. Colonia was eliminated in the quarterfinals of both the GMCT and sectionals by St. Thomas Aquinas and South Plainfield, respectively.

8. Woodbridge (10-12) -- preseason No. 10 — The Barrons endured a rollercoaster start to their season by winning their first five games and losing their next five. Woodbridge defeated Sayreville twice during the regular season, but lost to the Bombers in the opening round of the GMCT, then defeated Ridge in the first round, but lost to eventual state Group 4 runner-up Watchung Hills in the sectional semis.

9. Old Bridge (10-16) - preseason No. 4 — The Knights shared third place in the Red Division, sweeping Monroe, but fell to Spotswood twice. Old Bridge also lost to South Plainfield in the GMCT quarterfinals and suffered a 2-1 loss to Sayreville in the opening round of the state tournament.

10. South Brunswick (9-15) - preseason unranked — The Vikings finished fourth in the White Division and knocked off then-undefeated East Brunswick with a 10-inning decision on May 1. South Brunswick dropped a one-run decision to Colonia in the opening round of the GMCT, then defeated Blue-Division champion Perth Amboy twice in eight days, including the state tournament, before being eliminated by East Brunswick.

BEST OF THE REST: Edison (14-7), Metuchen (5-13), Middlesex (13-12), Perth Amboy (13-10), Wardlaw-Hartridge (18-3).
