Just six weeks after signing with the Denver Broncos, former Clemson Tigers standout cornerback Mario Goodrich has reportedly been waived by the team, marking another tough chapter in his quest to secure a permanent NFL roster spot.
Goodrich, a decorated college star who earned first-team All-ACC and third-team All-America honors in 2021 while also being named MVP of the Cheez-It Bowl, has had a tumultuous professional journey since going undrafted in 2022. He spent two seasons on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad before a short stint with the New York Giants and a successful run in the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions.
The 6-foot, 191-pound cornerback was a defensive force for the Stallions this past UFL season, where he posted 17 total tackles, six pass breakups, and a team-leading three forced fumbles across seven games. His strong performance earned him another shot in the NFL, signing with the Broncos on June 18th to provide depth to a highly competitive secondary.
However, the team opted to waive Goodrich to make room for newly signed linebacker Garret Wallow, who worked out for the team this week. For Goodrich, this latest setback sends him back to the uncertainty of the NFL's waiver wire.
Goodrich's career trajectory stands as a stark contrast between his collegiate dominance and the relentless uphill battle that undrafted players face in the pros. At Clemson, he was a pillar of consistency, amassing 84 tackles, 15 pass breakups, and five interceptions over 47 games. In the NFL, he has appeared in only four games (one start) for the Eagles in 2023, posting five total tackles.
While this latest news is a frustrating turn for the former Tiger, his success in the UFL proves he has the talent to compete at a high level.
