Former Longhorns RB Jaydon Blue making a good first impression on Cowboys coaching staff

When the Dallas Cowboys selected former Longhorn Jaydon Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, expectations were high. In college, he was a human highlight in one of the most competitive conferences in the country. While he has started his first NFL season on the injured reserve, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave an update on the rookie running back yesterday.

The Cowboys head coach provided encouraging news, saying, "Jaydon's actually put together a couple of really good weeks of practice. He has. We challenged him, we talked to him about consistency, working harder on the scout team, and things like that, man, it's huge. Give him credit, he's been terrific." That is encouraging news for fans following an impressive college career.

During his Longhorns career, the Texas native recorded 1,161 yards on 214 carries. He also added 503 receiving yards to his resume and found the end zone 11 times on the ground. Whenever the Longhorns needed a spark, Blue delivered, making him a popular prospect leading up to the draft.

With Blue sidelined, the Cowboys have relied on Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. So far, Williams has been the most productive with 227 rushing yards on 43 carries. While he has held his own, Blue, when healthy, is hard to stop and brings game-changing speed to the offense.

Although Blue is anxious to get back on the field, it seems like he is doing all the right things. If he continues to work hard, it will be challenging for Dallas to keep him inactive, regardless of the defense's look. The Cowboys are off to a 1-2 start and could use a spark on offense.

Whenever Blue does get on the field, it will be exciting to see what he can do. In his last year as a Longhorn, the Klein Cain High graduate averaged 5.4 yards a carry and 48.7 yards a game. Those are numbers he is eager to build on while carving out a role in the Dallas backfield.
