FSU outlasts UT Martin, moves to 3-1 on the year

Florida State, back at home after a hard-fought loss to the Florida Gators last Tuesday, faced off against the UT Martin Skyhawks in a matchup that doubled as an opportunity to honor former head coach and UTM alumnus Leonard Hamilton.

Despite leading for the majority of the opening half (11:32 vs. 4:49), Florida State failed to truly separate itself from UT Martin over the entirety of the opening 20 minutes, leading by just three at halftime.

The Skyhawks were able to keep themselves in the game by shooting 48% from the field (including 42.9% from beyond the arc), hitting timely shots to stymie any potential runs on FSU’s end as Florida State, meanwhile, shot 39% (35% from the three).

After seeing its biggest lead of the first half be by just six points, Florida State came out firing to begin the second and quickly surged to its first double-digit lead of the night off the back of a 14-0 run borne from strong defensive play and points in the paint.

FSU eventually pushed that lead to 17 points by the 13-minute mark, which was maintained until Robert McCray V ( who was once again the Seminoles’ most consistent offensive threat) ran into foul trouble at the halfway point of the second. At that point, the Skyhawks began to try and claw their way back into the matchup, getting FSU’s lead back under single digits after hitting a four-point play. After going back and forth for a bit, FSU worked its way back to a consistent double-digit lead with just under 3 minutes left, turning a 79-71 lead at 3:17 in the game to an 87-73 win to advance to 3-1 on the year.

FSU returns to play this Friday, facing off against Georgia Southern at home. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m., with the game streaming on ACC Network Extra.
