George Russell won just his second ever sprint race Saturday morning, following setting his Mercedes on pole and surviving pressure from both Ferraris and a late safety car.

This is Russell's second win of the season, following his win from pole in the 2026 grand opener at Albert Park.

His Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli faded from second at the start of the race, falling back to eighth. Antonelli's opening lap went from bad to worse as the sophomore Mercedes driver collided with the Freshman Red Bull driver of Isack Hadjar in turn six, an incident in which the stewards handed Antonelli a 10-second penalty.

To win the race, Russell had to battle and hold off his former teammate and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton was gifted second position as Antonelli fell down the field, following his pass on defending champion Lando Norris in the first few corners.

Hamilton brought the battle to Russell, and the two traded positions with the help of the new regulations, turning battles for position into trades of saves and boosts.

After a few laps, Russell and Hamilton’s battle subsided, and Hamilton’s Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc saw the opening for second with his teammate struggling to keep pace with the Mercedes.

Leclerc and Hamilton battled, which the Italian team is happy to let their two racers do, trading for second. With five laps to go, the second Mercedes of Antonelli was closing in on the Ferraris on the podium when the safety car was deployed.

The Audi of Nico Hulkenberg stalled on track, with what seemed to be an electrical issue, prompting the stewards to stand back and requiring Hulkenberg to stay in the car. The car was ultimately deemed safe and brought back to the pits.

At the same time, Cadillac called for Valtteri Bottas to retire.

The race resumed with three laps to go, with Russell in the lead over Leclerc and Hamilton. Russell was able to extend his lead on the restart as Leclerc oversteered into the corner.

With his time penalty, Antonelli fell to fifth, sandwiched between the two McLarens, with Norris in fourth and Oscar Piastri in sixth. Liam Lawson captured the final point of the sprint for Racing Bulls in seventh ahead of Ollie Bearman. Max Verstappen finished ninth, failing to pick up a point for Red Bull.

Hulkenberg, Bottas, and Arvid Lindblad all failed to finish with damage during the race.
