Georgia running back entering transfer portal after three seasons with Bulldogs

A Georgia football running back who burst onto the scene during the Bulldogs’ 2022 national championship season but was hampered by injuries the last two seasons is heading to the transfer portal.

Branson Robinson, a rising redshirt junior, posted the news on his Instagram account on Wednesday morning, the first day the portal opened in the spring period.

Robinson rushed for 98 yards on 12 carries with a 15-yard touchdown run against Auburn in 2022 and scored two touchdowns and rushed for 42 yards in the national championship win over TCU. He finished his freshman season with 330 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Robinson sustained a ruptured patella tendon in the preseason in 2023 and was lost for the season.

“It's been great having him back from a physical toughness standpoint, a reliability standpoint, ball security, third down pickups, special teams,” coach Kirby Smart said before last season. “ He's just a really good football player. I love the way he went about doing things.”

Robinson rushed for 73 yards and three touchdowns in the first six games last season before missing the rest of the season with a right knee injury. He missed spring practices after surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

Robinson was the nation’s No. 4 ranked running back in the class of 2022, according to the 247Sports Composite. The Canton, Miss. native picked Georgia over Tennessee, Alabama and Clemson.

Georgia’s running back group includes Nate Frazier, promising freshman Bo Walker sophomore Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips, redshirt senior Cash Jones and redshirt sophomore Roderick Robinson who has battled injuries himself.

Georgia could look to the transfer portal to add another player at the position.
