Georgia softball advances to super regionals, faces No. 3 Florida
The Georgia Bulldogs softball team upset the No. 14 national seed Duke Blue Devils in the NCAA Tournament to advance to the super regionals for a third consecutive season. Georgia will face the No. 3 Florida Gators in the Gainesville Super Regional.
Georgia upset Duke on Sunday night to win the Durham Regional. Georgia went 3-1 regionals. The Bulldogs beat Coastal Carolina 6-3 on Friday to start the regional. Next, Georgia beat Duke 8-2 on Saturday.
Duke won its elimination game and played Georgia on Sunday in a pair of games. Duke beat Georgia 8-1 early on Sunday, but the Bulldogs won a winner-take-all elimination game 5-2 later on Sunday evening.
In Georgia's elimination game against Duke, the Blue Devils quickly scored two runs in the first inning. Georgia trailed all game before the Bulldogs added a run in the sixth and seventh inning to force extra innings. The Bulldogs then poured on three runs in the eight inning and shut down Duke's last gasp effort to continue the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Georgia softball is 34-21 and 7-16 in the SEC this year. The Bulldogs enter the Florida series carrying some serious momentum, but Georgia is just 3-8 against top 10 opponents this season. Georgia is 8-10 on the road and somehow has not faced Florida this season despite the two schools being SEC rivals.
