Getting no production from their third-base platoon, Brewers option Oliver Dunn to Class AAA

The first recipient of a shipment of torpedo bats on the team, Oliver Dunn will have to try them out at Class AAA Nashville.

The Milwaukee Brewers optioned the scuffling third baseman to the minor leagues during the off-day Thursday. Through 41 plate appearances, Dunn is batting .167 with a .205 on-base percentage and slugging .222 as part of an underwhelming third-base platoon with Vinny Capra.

A corresponding move will be announced Friday. Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monasterio are the Brewers' current infield options on the 40-man roster.

Oliver Dunn of the Brewers is tagged out by Reds first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand after Dunn's sacrifice bunt April 6 at American Family Field. Dunn was optioned to Class AAA Nashville after struggling on both offense and defense.

Dunn, 27, has had a rough go of things in general to start the season. He's striking out in 26.8% of plate appearances while hardly walking. On top of the woes with the bat, Dunn's defense has featured a few costly mishaps, as well.

Dunn along with Capra have formed a sluggish hot corner platoon. Brewers third basemen are carrying a .421 OPS through 19 games, which is surprisingly not the worst in the majors; Philadelphia's is .405 due to Alec Bohm's early-season doldrums.

Dunn ended his first stint with Milwaukee this year on a somewhat positive note, at least, by dropping a squeeze bunt down on the first pitch he saw while using a torpedo bat Wednesday.
