Handful of Spartans receive All-Big Ten honors, recognition

The Michigan State football season didn't go as we all wanted it to, but there were still some postseason recognition to be handed out for a number of Spartans.

A handful of Spartans received All-Big Ten honors this week, with a total of seven different players either landing on one of the All-Big Ten teams or receiving honorable mention. Spartans star punter Ryan Eckley was the lone first-team selection for Michigan State, with a majority of the players being honorable mention selections.

Here's a breakdown of which Spartans were recognized by the Big Ten this week:

  • Eckley - first team (coaches and media)
  • Jack Velling - third team (media)
  • Omari Kelly - honorable mention (media)
  • Matt Gulbin - honorable mention (media)
  • Nick Marsh - honorable mention (coaches and media)
  • Jordan Hall - honorable mention (coaches and media)
  • Wayne Matthews - honorable mention (media)

Michigan State finished the season with a 4-8 overall record and 1-8 mark in Big Ten play this season. The Spartans opened the season with 3-0 start, but then went on to lose their next eight games before ending the year with a win over Maryland in the season-finale.
