The Atlanta Hawks are not done making moves despite making a big splash acquiring Kristaps Porzingis on Tuesday. Just one day later, Atlanta used the NBA draft to make an additional trade with an eye on their current roster as well as the future.
Additionally, the Hawks have a $25 million trade exception at their disposal that the team did not have to utilize in the Porzingis deal. This would allow Atlanta to absorb the contract of a veteran player from another team.
"Remember when The Stein Line reported last week that the Hawks were determined to make use of their $25 million trade exception that still linger's from last summer's Dejounte Murray trade?" NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer noted on Tuesday. "That doesn't change with the Porziņģis trade."
The Hawks already traded the No. 22 pick as part of the three-team deal with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets to land Porzingis. On draft night, Atlanta also moved down from No. 13 to No. 23 in a deal with the New Orleans Pelicans. The Hawks acquired a 2026 first rounder to move down ten spots.

"The Atlanta Hawks are trading the No. 13 pick in the Draft to the New Orleans Pelicans for the No. 23 pick and an unprotected 2026 first round pick (most favorable of New Orleans and Milwaukee), sources tell ESPN," ESPN's Shams Charania noted on Wednesday.
As a result of the trade, the Hawks landed homegrown talent Asa Newell who will have a short move from the Georgia Bulldogs back to his hometown of Atlanta. The Pelicans selected Maryland Terrapins standout Derik Queen with the No. 13 pick acquired from the Hawks.

It appears to be a solid move for Atlanta who was still able to acquire a player who was projected as a potential lottery pick while adding a future first-round selection.
