HBCU Football makes unique decision with addition of Unity Classic

When history and purpose collide, something unforgettable is born. That’s exactly what’s happening in Jacksonville, Florida, where the Unity Classic is set to make its historic debut this fall, promising more than just a football game—it’s a celebration of culture, legacy, and unity.

A Clash of Conferences with a Deeper Message

On September 13, the Unity Classic will spotlight an early-season interconference showdown between Virginia Union University (CIAA) and Edward Waters University (SIAC). These two storied HBCUs, founded just one year apart—VUU in 1865 and EWU in 1866—will battle on the gridiron at Glover Community Field in Jacksonville. But as EWU President Dr. A. Zachary Faison said during the April 25 press conference, “this is not just about football… it’s about the legacy of Black higher education.” With over 10,000 expected in attendance, the matchup is primed to energize both conferences and ignite a new tradition.

More Than a Game: A Weekend of Celebration and Unity

The Unity Classic is built on shared pride and purpose. From the battle of the bands and pregame tailgate to a gospel concert and kickoff luncheon, it’s a full cultural experience. Committee Chair Dr. Linda Groomes emphasized that the event will fund scholarships for students at both schools, ensuring the impact goes beyond the scoreboard. “We believe when one student hurts because he or she cannot pay their tuition, all students hurt,”Groomes stated, highlighting the Classic’s academic mission.

A Vision Born from Legacy and Leadership

The Unity Classic was conceived by EWU trustee and longtime HBCU advocate Rev. Dr. R.B. Holmes Jr., whose deep ties to both EWU and FAMU fuel his commitment. “This is going to be magic,” Holmes declared, underscoring his vision to honor and uplift Black institutions during times of national uncertainty. His leadership is helping solidify the Unity Classic as not just a game, but a movement.
