Heavy snow postpones Winter Olympics snowboard, ski competitions
Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Snowfall triggered a postponement of activities Tuesday at the 2026 Winter Olympics, including snowboarding and skiing events in Livigno, Italy.
Dozens of workers flocked to the hills of the Livigno Snow Park to in an attempt to clear the course, but officials eventually decided the conditions were too dangerous for competition, due to poor visibility and potential speed impacts. New times for the events were not yet announced.
Women's aerials qualifications for freestyle skiing was set to start at 5:15 a.m. EST Tuesday. A second round of qualifications, set for 6 a.m., and two rounds of men's aerials qualifications also were postponed.
The women's slopestyle snowboarding final, which was set to start at 7 a.m., also will be rescheduled due to the severe weather at Livigno Snow Park. Jessica Perlmutter and Lily Dhawornvej are the Americans set to compete in those events.
Connor Curran, Derek Krueger, Quinn Dehlinger and Christopher Lillis are the Americans in freestyle skiing men's aerials qualifications. Kaila Kuhn, Winter Vinecki, Tasia Tanner and Kyra Dossa will represent Team USA in women's aerials.
Lillis finished sixth in the aerials finals at the 2022 Winter Olympics. He placed eighth in 2018. Kuhn placed eighth in women's aerials in 2022.
The snowboard slopestyle final is now expected to be held Wednesday in Livigno. The men's slopestyle final is also on track to be held Wednesday at the same facility.
Tuesday marked the second consecutive day that weather disrupted the Winter Olympics schedule in Livigno. Monday's women's freeski big air final was delayed by 75 minutes. Canada's Megan Oldham won gold in that event. China's Eileen Gu and Italian Flora Tabanelli claimed respective silver and bronze medals.
