Here's what Sean McVay said about Matthew Stafford's return to practice

There’s been a heightened level of concern and panic surrounding Matthew Stafford’s back injury lately, especially after the lack of an update from his scheduled workout on Saturday. But on Monday, the Ramswelcomed Stafford back at practice for the first time since training camp opened nearly a month ago.

Stafford took part in individual and team drills, showing the ability to roll out to his left, as well as throwing it deep to his receivers. He was a full participant and looked like the Matthew Stafford everyone knows, which is encouraging.

He’s not completely out of the woods yet, however. Sean McVay spoke to reporters after practice and tempered expectations a little bit. While he said it was “great” to see Stafford on the field, he said the Rams will continue to take it a “day at a time” with the veteran quarterback.

McVay added that the Rams want to see how Stafford responds this afternoon and on Tuesday. So for now, he's still considered day-to-day, and even week-to-week, as he has been.

Additionally, Brock Vierra of Sports Illustrated said there's no word on whether Stafford is expected to be ready for Week 1 yet. The start of the season is still three weeks away, so Stafford has time to ramp things up and get ready for the opener.

Understandably, the Rams are taking it extremely slow with Stafford leading up to the season. He's 37 years old and back injuries are always at risk of flaring up again at any moment. They want to ensure he's not only ready for the start of the season, but healthy for a potential playoff run later this year.

The Rams open the regular season on Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans, which will be Stafford's first opportunity to play in a game because he will not take part in any preseason games.
